On March 17, 2022, at the Hemisfair, Build San Antonio Green hosted the 20th Annual Solar Fest. All vendors/exhibitors helped put on a festival for the public to enjoy for free. Attendees took home free trees handed out by CPS Energy, Tesla EV models for showings, and information within the solar city community.
San Antonio is the leader in solar energy in Texas, while CPS Energy is the nation's largest municipally-owned utility. Rick Luna, Director of Technology at CPS Energy, took the stage as one of the keynote speakers at Solar Fest. Luna pointed out, “Many of the solar contractors who have come here, who offer solar, is partly because of the rebates that we [CPS Energy] offer.” Luna is right. To sum it up, even more, he said, “Today we’ve got solar on 30,000 rooftops in the city.”
It is an exciting time for our solar city. There to help us celebrate was Mayor Ron Nirenberg, who also spoke. Mayor Nirenberg acknowledged the BSAG organization as what started as a small non-profit devoted to making sure our city's buildings were eco-friendly. BSAG has also helped reduce our carbon footprint and has become a true success by reaching 30 million square feet of certified green buildings in San Antonio. Mayor Nirenberg also let us in on what is to come next. He said, “BSAG is working on a program in conjunction with CPS Energy, [called] Bring Solar Home.”
With participating events such as the 20th annual Solar Fest celebration or the efforts of our solar city, there is a bigger solar energy picture for your children and grandchildren.
